The NYC Subway has used tokens for over 50 years, then they used Metrocards for the next 20 years. Now the MTA plans to phase out Metrocards and replace them with RFID tags and smartphone scanners. Things are finally looking up the NYC commuter and they will finally not need to run their Metrocards with the magnetic strip facing out through the filthy scanners ever again
